The survey reveals strong appetite for progressive taxation, with three-quarters of Britons backing a wealth tax.
According to the survey from YouGov, wealth-based reforms enjoy the strongest support: 75% back a wealth tax, 69% support a mansion tax, and 60% favor an exit tax. Additionally, 56% want council tax proportionate to property values, while 52% support inflation-linked tax thresholds.
Moderate support emerged for other changes: 50% back higher employer National Insurance for foreign workers, and 48% favor shifting council tax from tenants to landlords (net +14). Merging National Insurance with income tax achieved 43% support (net +17).
More contentious proposals received mixed reactions. Replacing fuel duty with road use tax garnered 38% support (net -3), while land value tax replacing stamp duty got just 34% (net -5).
The least popular reforms favor the wealthy. Cutting the top tax rate below 40% received only 29% support (net -19), while a flat tax performed worst at 20% support with net opposition of 43 points.
The findings show British voters strongly prefer tax reforms targeting wealth and high earners over policies distributing tax burdens evenly across income levels.
